Howard David

Howard David

Howard David is a veteran American sportscaster.

Biography

Over the years, David has been the radio play-by-play man for several pro sports teams including the NBA's New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics, and the NFL's New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. He also had stints with the New York Cosmos soccer team and as the voice of Princeton University basketball and football.

CBS Radio Sports

David was also CBS Radio's lead play-by-play voice for its "Sunday Night Football" coverage until 1995, when CBS moved him to the "Monday Night Football" booth, replacing long-time voice Jack Buck. He remained in that position until 2002, and from 1998 on was pulling double duty as the Jets' radio announcer (replacing Ian Eagle, who had moved to the "NFL on CBS" TV coverage), requiring a substitute when the Jets would play on Monday night. (Another example of CBS needing a substitute for David came during the 1999 NFL Conference Championship games, where the "Monday Night Football" radio team was slated to cover the NFC Championship Game between the Falcons and the Vikings; since the Jets were in the AFC Championship game against the Broncos David was unavailable for the game and John Rooney subbed for him but David returned to call the Super Bowl.)

David left both positions after Super Bowl XXXVI to take a position with the Dolphins. His contract was not renewed after the 2004 season.

Feud with Neil Rogers

While working for the Dolphins station, David became embroiled in a feud with radio personality Neil Rogers, who tagged David with the name "Moe Howard David" and continuously mocked David with Three Stooges-type comedy bits featuring Moe and his sidekick, Steve "Goldy" Goldstein, another personality on the same station. Even though David is long gone, Rogers and his listeners still refer to him, and Rogers constantly plays a clip of the Moe character saying "doy doy doy."

Current assignments

Currently, David is one of SportsUSA's NFL voices. In 2006, David provided hand-by-hand coverage for many events at the World Series of Poker for Sirius Satellite Radio. He is currently trying out for the time slot vacated by the departed Tony Bruno on Sporting News Radio.
