Jimma University (JU) is one of the top higher learning Universities in Ethiopia located in Oromia Region, Jimma Zone. It offers programs and researches which lead toward degrees in different fields of studies. It was established on December 1999 with the amalgamation of Jimma College of Agriculture and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences. The main campus of the University is next to the former palace of the kings of Kingdom of Jimma.

History and Overview

Early history

Jimma University (JU) is established in 1999 from the unification of Jimma College of Agriculture (founded in 1952), and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences (founded in 1983) [ [http://www.ju.edu.et/index.php The Official Website of Jimma University ] ] .The campus is located in Jimma city 335 km southwest of Addis Ababa within an area of 167 hectares. Since 2003, the University has an affiliation with Ambo College of Agriculture which was established in 1931 and located at Ambo town, 125 km west of the capital Addis Ababa.

JU is Ethiopia's first innovative community Oriented Education Institution of higher learning. It's established on ever green land where the majority of coffee production of the country comes from.
