June 30 ,2006 , the city has an estimatedpopulation of 62,285. The total area is 52.75 km².The
kanji characters for Rittō are "chestnut" (栗) and "East" (東), despite the fact that Rittō is both in the west region of Japan and it has no particularly chestnut trees. Actually, "栗" in Rittō doesn't mean chestnuts but Kurita District (栗太郡), a former district which contained Rittō, and Rittō was located in east of the district.Municipal timeline
