Municipal Area Changes
*April 1 ,1927 -The village of Shiojiri gained town status.
*April 1 ,1959 -The city was founded when the town of Shiojiri merged with the villages of Kataoka, Hirooka, Munaga, and Chikumachi.
*April 1 ,1960 -The city lost Kitauchida area (excluding Gakenoyu) to the city of Matsumoto.
*April 1 ,1961 -The city lost Gakenoyu area to the city of Matsumoto.
*June 28 ,1961 -The city absorbed the village of Araiba.
*May 1 ,1968 -Nishichikuma District changed their name to Kiso District.
*April 1 ,1982 -The city surrendered parts of Araiba (eastside of airport) to the city of Matsumoto.
