Los Pinchudos

Los Pinchudos

Los Pinchudos are an elaborate Chachapoya tomb complex, consisting of nine tombs built into a high rock cleft in one of Peru's northern Andean cloud forests. It's located in Rio Abiseo National Park, a natural and cultural World Heritage site that's guarded and closed to all except scientific missions.

The two-foot tall mahogany carvings bore witness to waves of looters who ransacked the burial chambers. Vandals even hacked down one of the six statues, whose robust male anatomy inspired the name Los Pinchudos (slang for "big penises").
