Component Validator for Environmentally Friendly Aero Engine

Component Validator for Environmentally Friendly Aero Engine, also known as CLEAN, is a EU funded research program within the EEFAE (Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Aircraft Engine) project. All major European engine manufacturers are participating in EEFAE in an attempt to significantly alleviate the ecological impact of future aircraft engines. CLEAN is one of the two experimental engines funded through EEFAE. The second one is ANTLE, which aims to demonstrate low emission technologies for the near term.

CLEAN technologies to reduce fuel consumption, and with it CO₂ emissions, by as much as 20 percent are being tested, with particular reference to geared turbofan and, in the longer term, recuperated aeroengines. A novel combustor to reduce NOX by as much as 80% is also being investigated in the technology demonstrator programme.

The SNECMA led programme involves MTU, Volvo Aero and Avio. The technology demonstrator made its first run at the University of Stuttgart's altitude test facility in September 2004. The program was concluded in March 2005.
