Greenlining Institute

The Greenlining Institute is a public policy, research, and advocacy non-profit organization based in Berkeley, California. According to its mission statement, it "works to improve the quality of life for low-income and minority communities." It emphasizes encouraging and assisting the providing of business opportunities in the communities it serves.

The Institute takes its name from the practice of redlining, by which various services are denied or restricted in particular areas. "Greenlining" is a neologism for the opposite of redlining.

The Greenlining Institute had its origins in 1971, as an informal Greenlining Coalition "formed to combat employment, service and lending discrimination by financial institutions and California’s regulated utilities." It was formally incorporated as the Greenlining Institute in 1993.
