Vanden Heuvel was born in
Rochester, New York and attended public schools inNew York . He is a graduate ofDeep Springs College andCornell University . AtCornell Law School , he was editor-in-chief of Cornell'slaw review . He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1952. He joined the law firm ofDonovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine as an Associate in 1952, his first law firm. As an early protégé of
Office of Strategic Services founderWilliam Joseph Donovan , vanden Heuvel served at the U.S. embassy (1953–1954) inBangkok ,Thailand as Donovan's Executive Assistant. Afterward, in 1958, vanden Heuvel served as Counsel to New York State GovernorAverell Harriman . He became U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy's assistant in 1962 and was involved in Kennedy's 1964 and 1968 political campaigns. As special assistant to Attorney General Kennedy, vanden Heuvel played the key role in court orchestrating the desegregation of thePrince Edward County school system inVirginia . This action expanded the scope of the landmarkBrown v. Board of Education decision.
