Synopsis
Joel Larsen is a single, depressed 34-year-old paper salesman with a sad life. His sister Cheryl who once had a promising future is now a drug-addict. His childhood friend Pat who once held idealistic principles is now a sleazy attorney. His mother Karen ran off and his father Bill is an unhealthy, bitter, divorced man. Joel is given a second chance to get his life right thanks to a freakish accident that catapults him back to 1981 as a 14-year old. He is zapped and wakes up in his teenage body, but with all his adult memories from 2002 intact. He eventually accepts this new reality, although he tells no one except his best friend Pat. Blessed with adult wisdom, though hampered by adolescent urges, Joel sets out to right the wrongs that will befall him and his family.
Joel has many opportunities to use his knowledge of the future to his own personal advantage. For example, he attempts to invest in Intel stock, borrows from a speech in Dead Poets Society when running for Student Body, and palms off 1990s' pop music hits as his own. (He sings Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" at school, and turns in Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for a poetry assignment). However, the crux of the show is Joel using his knowledge to attempt to rectify the past, such as taking chances he had missed, learning how to stand up for himself, and figuring out how to put his ill-fated family and friends on the right path.
