George Miles Chilcott (
January 2 ,1828 –March 6 ,1891 ) was a Delegate from theTerritory of Colorado and a Senator fromColorado . He was born nearCassville, Pennsylvania onJanuary 2 ,1828 . In 1844, moved with his parents toJefferson County, Iowa . There he studied medicine until 1850. He became sheriff of Jefferson County in 1853 and then moved to theTerritory of Nebraska in 1856. He was elected a member of theTerritorial House of Representatives in 1856 but left after he moved to the Territory of Colorado in 1859. Two years later he joined the Territorial council, serving for one year. While a resident in the Territory of Colorado, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1863. Between 1863 and 1867 he was register of theUnited States Land Office .He made his major break into politics when he was elected as a Republican Delegate to the Fortieth Congress. He served a term before once again joining the Territorial council for 2 more years between 1872 and 1874. He was a member of the
Colorado House of Representatives in 1878 but in 1882 was appointed to theUnited States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation ofHenry M. Teller , becoming part of the Forty-seventh Congress as a Republican. He served a short year and retired from public service. He died inSt. Louis, Missouri onMarch 6 ,1891 . He was laid to rest in Masonic Cemetery,Pueblo, Colorado .External links
