- Paul Fryxell
Paul A. Fryxell (born 2 February 1927,
Moline, Illinois ) is an American botanist.He attended Moline public schools and later Augustana College, graduating with a B.A. in 1949, and
Iowa State University (M.S., 1951, Ph.D., 1955). After employment with theNew Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station (1952-1955) and theWichita State University (Asst. Professor of Botany, 1955-1957), he joined theAgricultural Research Service , USDA, with which agency he spent most of his career as a Research Botanist, located on theTexas A&M University campus. He retired from this position in 1994 and became Adjunct Professor inIntegrative Biology at theUniversity of Texas at Austin . He is also an Honorary Curator at theNew York Botanical Garden .His research interests have centered on the taxonomy of the Neotropical
Malvaceae , including work on theevolution ,biodiversity , and taxonomy ofGossypium , the genus that includes the world'scotton crop. He served as president of theAmerican Society of Plant Taxonomists (1983-1984) and of theSociety for Economic Botany (1988-1989), has held a Fulbright Scholar Award for study inArgentina (1993), is a Fellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science and of theTexas Academy of Science , and is a member of theCommission of Flora Neotropica .Major publications include "The Natural History of the Cotton Tribe" (Texas A&M University Press, 1979), "the Malvaceae of Mexico" (Systematic Botany Monographs, 25: 1-522. 1988), "The American genera of Malvaceae" (Brittonia 49: 204-269. 1997), and a monograph of the genus
Pavonia (Flora Neotropica Monograph 76: 1-284. 1999). He is a contributor of treatments of the Malvaceae to numerous Neotropical floristic works and has conducted fieldwork in theneotropics , primarily inMexico but also in parts of Central andSouth America , as well as in tropicalAustralia .
