Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo

Benito Juárez is one of the eight municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It reported a population of 572,973 persons in the 2005 INEGI census, most of whom lived in the municipal seat, Cancún.

It is named after the 19th century president and statesman Benito Juárez.

Location

Benito Juárez is located in the north of the state nearest Isla Mujeres and the Caribbean Sea. Its territory extends 1664 square kilometers and it represents 3.27% of the territory of the state. It has 572,973 habitants since 2005.

History

The Mayan culture occupied the territory and they still subsisting. In Cancún are different types of archeological monuments like "Ruinas de el Rey". When people founded Cancún as a town in 1902 they started to produce and export gum and “palo de tinte”. They transported it to Puerto Morelos for the translation to Cozumel and finally to exported abroad.

After World War 2 the gum production failed so in 1960’s they started with the commercial activities. The first hotel was founded in 1974. In this year Quintana Roo was recognized as a state. The political division started so Benito Juarez is founded with Isla Mujeres territory.
