It is famous for its wine production and for its parish church St. Martin, dating from 1243, with its splendid wooden monochrome main altar, 1483.Culturally and politically however the people of Lorch feel that they are part of the
Hessian Rheingau , as the township ofLorchhausen is the most northern community inHesse .In the Middle Ages, Lorch served as the northern cornerstone of
Mainz facing towards theRheingau . Its position at the border was notable in the years after theFirst World War , when Lorch was the ‘capital’ of theFree State Bottleneck .
