Provider Independent Address Space

Provider Independent Address Space

Provider Independent Address Space (PI-addresses) are Internet Protocol addresses assigned by Regional Internet Registries directly to an end-user organization, without going through an Internet Service Provider. [ [http://www.ripe.net/info/faq/rs/isp.html#5 FAQs ] ]

It offers the end-user the opportunity to change service providers without changing addresses, and in particular to use multiple service providers at once in a multi-homed configuration, but creates problems for address aggregation as described in Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR).
