Gary Wayne Jones (born
November 11 1960 inHenderson, Texas ) is an American former coach inMajor League Baseball and a longtime minor league manager.Jones was signed by the
Chicago Cubs as afree agent infielder in 1982 out of theUniversity of Arkansas . He played for seven years in the Cubs and Athletics organizations, including two seasons with the Triple-ATacoma Tigers . After retiring as a player, he has led teams in theOakland Athletics ,Boston Red Sox , andSan Diego Padres organizations. To date, he has spent one season (by|1998) in the major leagues as the first-base coach of the Athletics.He was named the San Diego organization's roving infield instructor for 2007 after leading the Padres' AA Southern League
farm club , theMobile BayBears , during the by|2006 season.As a minor league skipper from 1990-97, 1999-2001 and 2003-06, Jones guided teams in the
International League ,Pacific Coast League , Southern League,Midwest League , andArizona Fall League . In addition to the BayBears, he has also managed theMadison Muskies ,Huntsville Stars ,Edmonton Trappers ,Pawtucket Red Sox , andFort Wayne Wizards . He served the Red Sox as coordinator of minor league instruction in by|2002.He led the Stars to the Southern League championship in 1994 and the Trappers to back-to-back Pacific Coast League championships in 1996 and 1997. He also won Manager-of-the-Year Awards in 1991 (Madison), 1994 (Huntsville), 1996 and 1997 (both with Edmonton).
