Diana Wynyard andClive Brook ). The film chronicles events including theSecond Boer War , the death ofQueen Victoria , the sinking of the "Titanic" and the Great War. The film was directed byFrank Lloyd ; Reginald Berkeley wrote the screenplay based on the original play byNoel Coward .Fox Movietone newsreel cameramen were sent to London to record the original stage production as a guide for the film version, which may account in part for the faithfully stagy nature of the final film. The movie is one of only two Best Picture winners not currently available on
DVD in Region 1 (the other being " Wings").Awards
"Cavalcade" won three
Academy Awards , for Best Picture, Best Director (Frank Lloyd ), and Best Art Direction (William S. Darling ).Diana Wynyard was also nominated for Best Actress for her role in this picture. Despite being a Best Picture Oscar winner and widely spoken of as one of the finest films ever made at the time, as well as being influential on later "Upstairs, Downstairs "-type dramas including "Forever and a Day" and Coward's own "This Happy Breed ", the film version of "Cavalcade" has fallen into obscurity.External links
