He began training at the age of 5 with his cousins, The Gracie Family, and like all children took it more as a game than really as something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He started to take training and competing more seriously at the age of 14. This is the time where Rigan would start to train everyday on the mat. His training sessions were all very technical and intensive under the eye of his two instructors Rolles Gracie and Carlos Gracie Jr. He also trained with his other cousins such Rickson Gracie, Rocian Gracie, Rillion Gracie, his uncle Carlson Gracie, and his brothers.
Professor Machado began competing at the world championship level at age of 14, and won his first Brazilian National Championship in yellow belt division. The Brazilian National Championship was the world championships at the time since the Brazilian Confederation had not been established by Carlos Gracie Jr. He achieved his legendary stature at the world championship level by amassing a record the likes of which have never been seen again. From the age of 14 through 21, Professor Machado won the World Championships every year and every belt division. He amassed a record of 365 wins and no losses in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition. He also created a record by having 19 matches in one day and finishing all of them by submission. He has also competed and won in other styles of grappling such as Judo and Sambo in which he took 2nd place in the World Championships.
