James MacIntosh Patrick

James MacIntosh Patrick

James MacIntosh Patrick (1907 – April 7 1998) was an etcher and painter celebrated for his finely observed paintings of the Angus landscape and Dundee, Scotland.

Born in Dundee, the son of an architect, MacIntosh Patrick studied at Glasgow School of Art and in Paris. He began his career as an etcher, but when the market for this collapsed in the 1930s he turned towards painting in watercolour and oil. Arguably Scotland’s foremost landscape painter, he was also known for his highly finished etchings made in the early 1930s.

Some of his works are normally on display at the McManus Galleries and Museum, Dundee, which is currently closed for a major refurbishment.

In 1999 the MacIntosh Patrick family generously donated his Archive to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
