The Sharon Plain (Lang-he|שרון) is the northern half of the coastal plain of
Israel . Its largest city isNetanya .The Plain lies between the
Mediterranean Sea to the west and the hills ofSamaria , convert|15|km|mi to the east. It stretches fromHaifa and Mount Carmel in the north to theYarkon River in the south, at the edge of the present city ofTel Aviv , about convert|90|km|mi. Parts of the Plain are included in the Haifa, Center, and Tel AvivDistricts of Israel .The Plain of Sharon is mentioned in the
Bible . In ancient times, the plain was particularly fertile and populous, but in theMiddle Ages it was abandoned and became marshland. In the the early twentieth century. it was reclaimed by Zionist pioneers, who populated the region with many settlements.
