Rennie was born in
Fife and grew up inStrathmiglo . His family ran the village shop and still live there. He went to theUniversity of Paisley .Career before parliament
While a student at the
University of Paisley , Rennie ran the Scottish Young Liberal Democrats and after graduation went on to work for the party inCornwall . He was Chief Executive of the Scottish Liberal Democrats from 1997 to 2001. After the creation of theScottish Parliament , he served as the party's chief of staff in Parliament.Prior to his election, he worked for a small Scottish communications firm, helping advise the

Rachel Squire died in January 2006. At the subsequent by-election held onFebruary 9 2006 Willie overturned a huge Labour majority to win the seat.He is a member of the Liberal Democrat's shadow defence team, and is chair of their parliamentary campaigns team. He was named as a Lib Dem parliamentary whip in 2008.
Interests
He is a keen runner and is a member of Dunfermline's Carnegie Harriers. He was also runner-up in the 2006 Scottish Coal-Carrying Championships held in Kelty.
