J. Pascal's Hardware and Furniture

J. Pascal's Hardware and Furniture

J. Pascal's Hardware and Furniture was a Montreal, Quebec retailer of hardware stores and furnitures stores. J.Pascal had long been a hardware chain only, but subsequently expanded to furniture retailing. Although they both worked under the trade name "Pascal", shared a common logo and went out of business at the same time; the hardware chain and furniture chain were kept separate in terms of operations and outlets. The hardwares stores were found mostly in shopping malls and commercial streets while the furnitures stores were in strip malls. J.Pascal was in business for more than 80 years and operated 20 hardware and furniture stores in the provinces of Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick before going bankrupt in 1990.

In the mid 1990s, a small Montreal furniture chain operated for several years under the name "Club Meuble Pascal" but was eventually forced to changed it's name to avoid confusion with the bankrupt company. This is due to the fact that J.Pascal, although primarily a hardware chain, has had a prominent presence in the furniture retailing lanscape in its final years and the use of the trademark Club Meuble Pascal could have misleaded people into believing this company had a connection with J.Pascal.

Throughout its long existence, J.Pascal had always been a family business. It held on to three generations. It was founded in 1907 by Jacob Pascal, then taken over by his boys - Maxwell Pascal, Arthur Pascal, and Hyman Pascal.

In this article, the expression "J.Pascal" is used to describe both divisions in order to facilitate the reading comprehension of the article and to distinguish Pascal's Furniture from the unrealeated chain "Club Meubles Pascal".
