Stephen Mason Merrill (1825 – 1905) was an American
bishop of theMethodist Episcopal Church , elected in 1872.Birth and Ordained Ministry
Born on
16 September ,1825 at Mount Pleasant,Ohio , Merrill was the grandson of aMinute-Man of theAmerican Revolution . He served with distinction as apastor andpresiding elder in the Ohio Annual Conference. He was the Editor of the "Western Christian Advocate" (an official publication of his denomination) when elected Bishop.Episcopal Ministry
Merill was elected to the
episcopacy the same year as another Ohio-born M.E. Bishop,Randolph Sinks Foster . Bishop Merrill became an acknowledged authority on Methodist law. One might say he was pre-eminently the "jurist of the Episcopal college. "Death and Burial
