Mike MacKinnon

Mike MacKinnon

Mike MacKinnon (born 1960) was a pirate radio DJ based in England. Born Waterloo, Liverpool on October 9th, 'Mike MacKinnon' is in fact the stage name of writer Michael Calum Jacques - the author of the book, 1st Century Radical (ISBN 9781438915746) and the creator of a board game called Vagrant . MacKinnon was educated at Ashby School, Moorlands College, St Mary's College, St Andrews University, and at St Cross College, Oxford University.

Among the "second wave" of pirate radio DJs or presenters, Mackinnon was known as "Maj" in his early days on radio (MR) during the mid to late 1970s, straight after school, covering Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Became based in North Yorkshire seaside towns including Bridlington and Scarborough when operating offshore on Midland. His radio career was punctuated by a number of incidents in noted London diners and clubs in the Soho and the Kensington districts, spoiling his otherwise potentially good relationship with agents like Marc Russo.

More recently MacKinnon worked with Miles Wilson (Radio Caroline) and Paul Trevelli (various radio stations), his mentor in the early 1970s. Mike's collection of singles was stolen in 2002 from storage in Lincolnshire and he subsequently ceased public performances thereafter. Mackinnon's most memorable phrases were the now familiar "It's good to have your company..." and "Hit after hit; coming your way tonight!" His best known show was his evening, one hour "70s Special".
