The dollar replaced the peso at par following Puerto Rico's transfer to the
United States of America in 1898. TheU.S. dollar circulates on the island. Between 1900 and 1909, banknotes were specifically issued for Puerto Rico.Banknotes
In 1900, beep"Banco Español de Puerto Rico" were overstamped with the words "Moneda Americana" for use on Puerto Rico. These were followed by notes issued by the "Bank of Puerto Rico" in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 dollars. These notes were also denominated in pesos. In 1909, a further issue of 5 and 10 dollars was produced which did not give the value in pesos. Between 1902 and 1908, the "First National Bank of Porto Rico at San Juan" issued notes in denominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars.
