Jorge González Torres

Jorge González Torres (born in 1942 in Mexico City) is a Mexican politician, founder of the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico. He was also the co-president of the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas.

He is a graduate of the industrial relations program of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and former faculty member of that institution and of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA). He became a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) but later left that organization to found the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM). He was nominated as a candidate to the presidency of Mexico in 1994 and to Head of Government of the Federal District in 1997. In 2000, instead of running for the presidency of Mexico he helped establish the coalition Alliance for Change to support the National Action Party's candidate Vicente Fox. It is estimated that the "green" vote accounted for more than five percent which gave Fox the victory.

Several members of the family of González Torres are also notable politicians:

* Jorge Emilio González Martínez ("El niño verde" ("The Green Boy"), son of González Torres is the current president of the PVEM
* Víctor González Torres (aka "Dr. Simi"), brother of Jorge, is currently campaigning for the presidency of Mexico as an independent candidate and owner of Farmacias Similares, a chain of pharmacies throughout Mexico and several Latin American countries. However, as in Mexico candidacy without a party is not allowed, he is not a registered candidate and all votes for him would be null votes.
* Virginia González Torres, sister of Jorge and Víctor, is the technical secretary of the National Council of Mental Health of the Ministry of Health of Mexico.
* Emilio Martinez Manautou, father-in-law of Jorge, is a former Minister of Health and governor of Tamaulipas.
