- Imbaba
Imbaba (Arabic: إمبابه) is a neighbourhood in northern
Egypt , located in the Giza governorate, and part of the greaterCairo metropolitan area. It is located at around coord|30|5|33|N|31|12|2|E.It is also the name of an adjacent administrative centre (مركز) in rural Giza which has a 19 villages in its jurisdiction.
Before it became increasingly urbanised, it was for centuries the final destination for camels brought from as far as
Sudan and theAfrican Horn to be sold in the Friday market. A market still exists today, but it is no longer as important as it used to be at the turn of 20th century. The origin of the name is not certain, however the word "Embaba" in Amharic means " [Egyptian] Doum Palm" (Hyphaene Thebaïca), so it is probable that the area was called so by Amharic speaking camel merchants and herders to describe the place where they met to do business.
