Portmore

Portmore is a coastal city in southern Jamaica in Saint Catherine, southwest of Kingston. It is located at around coord|17|58|0|N|76|52|0|W.

With a population over 175,000 (unverified), Portmore began as a large area for schematic residential development in the late 1960s, as the WIHCON organization built thousands of prototype housing units in an effort to alleviate the over-population of Kingston. It has since grown as a suburban city to Kingston, as its large population travels via the portmore toll road into Kingston daily for work, schooling, and many other essential services. Portmore was granted Municipality status recently,when and has its own City Council and Mayor, following the British-based model of other Jamaican cities' governments. While Portmore is not marketed as a tourist destination for the millions of incoming travellers to Jamaica every year, there are many places for entertainment, eating, relaxing and enjoyment such beaches,resturants, hotel and much more. Today, Portmore is one of the most important cities in the island nation and comprises approximately 10% of the population of the Kingston Corporate Area.

Geography

Portmore is built upon a generally flat area facing the Kingston Harbour with an intricate canal system which prevents flooding.

Transportation

Portmore, like Kingston, is served by JUTC urban transit which is a bus transportation company and connects Portmore residents with no ownership of a car with Kingston.The Portmore Toll Road is the major commuter Highway which connects the two cities of Kingston and Portmore via the Hunts Bay Bridge, with three lanes in each direction and a speed limit of approximately 110km.The city is served by the Norman Manley International Airport with over 130 flights weekly.

Sports

Portmore has a football (soccer) team in the Jamaican National Premier League called Portmore United F.C..
