John Montagu (1719–1795) naval officer and colonial governor of Newfoundland. He was born in
Lackham ,England and died inFareham ,Hampshire , England.Montagu began his naval career in the
Royal Naval Academy . He was appointed Governor andcommander-in-chief of Newfoundland in 1776. Montagu capturedSt. Pierre and Miquelon for the British and defended Newfoundland from both French and Americanprivateers .
