Pimpirev Glacier

Pimpirev Glacier

Pimpirev Glacier (Pimpirev Lednik pim-'pi-rev 'led-nik) on Livingston Island drains southeastwards towards Pimpirev Beach. It is situated W of Perunika Glacier, S of Tundzha Glacier and E of Kamchiya Glacier and extends 6 km in a SE-NW direction, and 2 km in NW-SE direction. The glacier mostly terminates on the shore, on several occasions penetrating the South Bay waters.

The glacier is named for Christo Pimpirev, geologist in the 1987-88 Bulgarian Antarctic campaign and leader of subsequent campaigns. The original name Pimpirev Ice Wall was given on October 29, 1996 to the 50-m high rectilinear ice scarp-slope running parallelly to and some 100 m inland from the coast of South Bay NE of Ereby Point. Reflecting subsequent changes in the ice cap configuration, the present name form was approved for the relevant glacier on November 4, 2005.

Location

The glacier is located at coord|62|36|36|S|60|24|37|W|type:glacier (Mapped by the Spanish Servicio Geográfico del Ejército in 1991))
