Minehead F.C. are a football club based in Minehead, Somerset, England. They were established in 1889. They play at the Recreation Ground in Irnham Road.

History

The club played local football in their early years with the exception of 1923-28, when they played in the Western League. They returned to the Western League in 1949 when it expanded to a Division Three. Minehead reached the top level of the Western League by 1957 and soon became a consistently strong side, finishing in the top half of the table every year, culminating in a runners-up finish in the 1971-72 season and a promotion to the Southern League.

Minehead saw quick success in the Southern League, winning Division One South in the 1975-76 season and promoting to the Premier Division. Minehead's inaugural season at those lofty heights saw a runners-up performance behind Wimbledon, who were subsequently elected to the Football League. However, this was the high point of Minehead's history. The club suffered relegation the following season and after four more years in the Southern League's Midland Division, they dropped back down to the Western League. Financial problems continued to afflict the club and they have since yo-yoed between the Premier Division and Division One. They have not finished above 18th in the Premier Division in any year since 1998-99, and are currently members of Division One.

Cup exploits

Minehead have reached the 1st round proper of the FA Cup on six occasions. In 1970-71, they lost to Shrewsbury Town in the 1st round. During the 1976-77 season, the club won at Swansea City before losing to Portsmouth in the 2nd round. They equalled their feat in the 1977-78 season, when a victory over Wycombe Wanderers preceded a 2nd round loss to Devon side Exeter City. From 1979-82, Minehead reached the First Round in three successive seasons, losing to Chesham United, Barnet and Dorchester Town respectively, the latter two on a replay. As the club's league fortunes have declined, so has its cup results as Minehead have not reached the 4th qualifying round since 1986-87.
