Jacques Thibaud (
September 27 ,1880 -September 1 ,1953 ) was a Frenchviolinist .Thibaud was born in
Bordeaux and studied theviolin first with his father before entering theParis Conservatoire at the age of thirteen. In 1896 he jointly won the conservatoire's violin prize withPierre Monteux (who later became a famous conductor). He was injured while fighting inWorld War I , after which he had to rebuild his technique. In 1943 he established the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Competition, a competition for violinists and pianists withMarguerite Long .As well as a soloist, Thibaud was noted for his performances of
chamber music , particularly as part of apiano trio with the pianistAlfred Cortot and cellistPablo Casals . He undertook concert tours with the PianistYves Nat andGeorge Enescu . He was a friend ofEugène Ysaÿe who dedicated his second sonata for solo violin to him. Among his students wasEric Rosenblith .He died in 1953 when his
Air France flight crashed intoMt. Cemet in theFrench Alps killing all on board. His 1720Stradivarius perished with him.References
