Freedom High School is a public secondary school located in South Riding, an unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. It is part of Loudoun County Public Schools and is located on 25450 Riding Center Drive.

General Information

Freedom first opened on August 29, 2005, with its student body coming from Broad Run High School and Mercer Middle School. The principal is Christine Forester, who previously was an assistant principal at Stone Bridge High School since it opened its doors in 2000.

Coincidentally, another Freedom High School is located in adjoining Prince William County which shares the same mascot and colors.

Freedom serves students who live in southeastern Loudoun County, including South Riding, Aldie, western Chantilly, and western parts of Centreville.

Demographics

In 2007-2008, Freedom's student body was 55% White; 11% Black; 10% Hispanic; and 23% Asian.

Test Scores

Freedom High School is an accredited high school by the Virginia Department of Education. The first senior class graduates in 2007.

Athletics

Freedom High School's mascot is an eagle and is a member of the AA Dulles District and Region II. The football team played a junior varsity schedule instead of an independent varsity schedule, like Heritage and Stone Bridge in their first year. Freedom played in the Dulles District as a full football member in 2007.

Although opening its doors a couple years ago, athletes at Freedom have already been recognized by relatively well-known colleges and universities. Freedom 2007 graduate Ron Hill plays Division II football at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Current senior Aly Gazarek became Freedom's first athlete to sign with a Division I school as she has signed her letter of intent to play for the University of South Florida Bulls following completion of her final year of high school.

Fine Arts

Freedom's fine arts program is supported through the Fine Arts Booster Association. In its inaugural year Freedom produced three drama performances, including a fall production of "Can't Take It With You", a winter production of "Done to Death", and the spring musical " Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". The drama department recently was successful with this year's fall production of "The Crucible". The drama department is currently working on a melodrama (comedy) play for its winter production. It's spring production still has not been announced. Freedom also has a chorus, band, and orchestra, each performing twice during the first school year. Freedom did not have a marching band in its first year, however one was organized for the 2006-2007 school year. It also organized a winter drumline, one of the only ones in the county. Other events that were supported by the FABA include the variety show and family arts night.

Leo Club

The Freedom High School Leo Club is the schools community service club. It's parent association is the South Riding Lions Club. They do a multitude of community service activities during the school year, including, Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Gift Wrapping for Eco, Volunteering at the Lions Club Eyeglass center, Raising gifts for the less fortunate, Winter Coat and Blanket Drive, and working with Operation Pinecone. It's biggest project by far is the annual Walk for Darfur. This year it is being held April 27, 2008 on the school track at 2:00 p.m. The club is collaborating with the Mercer Middle School Leo Club and the South Riding Lions Club to successfully pull off the project.

Freedom High School students participate the various organizations and groups: Debate Team, Model UN, Academic Team, Drama Club, Art Club, Literary Magazine, Yearbook, Spanish, German, French, Latin, Forensics, Anime Club, Reading Club, PEER, Dance Team, Step Team, Muslim Student Association, Chess Club, Chinese Students Association, Peace and Justice Club, FBLA, DECA, FCA, DESI, History, FCCLA, Environmental Outing Club, FCA, Mulitculutral Club, HOPE Club, SADD, Knitting Club, SOAR, Student Council and Leo Club.

Trivia

Freedom High School, could have been the subject of MTV's The Paper (TV series), but they declined.

Freedom High School was hosting the Lou Dobbs Tonight at their school for a five-part Lou Dobbs' Independent Convention.
