- JAD Records
JAD Records was a
record label that was co-owned byJohnny Nash , producer Arthur Jenkins, and businessmanDanny Sims , whose initials formed its logo. JAD Records was the label which signedBob Marley ,Peter Tosh andRita Marley to a non-exclusive long-term contract as both singers and song-writers.In 1996 JAD released a set of reworked songs from the early years of Bob Marley's career on an album called Soul Almighty - The Formative Years Vol 1. This was followed by Black Progress - The Formative Years Vol 2. Both albums used the vocal tracks from Bob's early material from the '60s and added modern backing tracks including vocals from Rita Marley, Bob's son Ziggy and members of the Melody Makers. The result was mixed as many of Bob Marley's vocal tracks were on old magnetic tape and in a poor state initially. Consequently, many of the enhancements made to the vocal tracks did not manage to lift the sound levels to acceptable modern day standards. Compared to the pure genius of Bob Marley's later recordings, these albums are a pale comparison, but for reggae purists they offer an insight into the brilliance that was to follow.
