History

The American Military University was founded in 1991 by James Etter a former Marine Corps officer and instructor, who originally taught at the Marine Corps Base Quantico. [ [http://www.apus.edu/APUS/Who-We-Are/biography/etter.htm Mr. James P. Etter ] ] The focus of the university was military personnel, whose mobility as a population coupled with both irregular schedules and limited financial resources prohibited regular attendance at an institution. At its launch, AMU enrolled 18 students in 22 courses and offered only graduate degrees. [ [http://www.amu.apus.edu/Catalog/08/undergraduate/general/history/history.htm History ] ]

In 2002, the distance learning concept was extended to a wider range of people, including civilians, with the founding of the American Public University. At the same time, APUS was founded to coordinate the efforts of the two organisations.
