Kiryat Yam ( _he. קִרְיַת יָם, lit. "Sea Town") is a town in the Haifa Bay district of Israel, convert|12|km|mi north of Haifa. One of a group of Haifa suburbs known as the Krayot, it is located on the Mediterranean coast, between Kiryat Haim and the Tzur Shalom industrial area, east of Kiryat Motzkin.

History

Kiryat Yam was founded in 1945 during the Mandate era by a group of Holocaust survivors and Jewish guards in the British police force. Kiryat Yam was built on sand dunes, on land purchased in 1939 by Gav Yam, a Jewish building society. In February 2008, a Google Earth user added a note that Kiryat Yam had been built on the ruins of Ghawarina, an abandoned Arab village. The town is suing Google for libel. Demographics

Kiryat Yam has a population of 45,000 residently, mostly blue-collar workers. [http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/956431.html)] The town is home to many immigrants from the former Soviet Union, North Africa and Ethiopia. The average income is 5,027 NIS per month, (almost 2,000 NIS below the national average).Fact|date=February 2008
