Wilbur Ware (
September 8 ,1923 –September 9 ,1979 ) was an Americanjazz double-bassist known for hishard bop percussive style.Born in
Chicago , Ware taught himself to play banjo and bass. In the 1940s, he worked withStuff Smith ,Sonny Stitt andRoy Eldridge . In the 1950s, Ware played withEddie Vinson ,Art Blakey , andBuddy DeFranco . He is best known for his work with theThelonious Monk quartet in 1957-58. In 1969, Ware played withClifford Jordan ,Elvin Jones andSonny Rollins . He later moved to Philadelphia, where he died fromemphysema in 1979.elected discography
