Jay Newman (1948 in
Brooklyn ,New York –June 17 ,2007 ) was aphilosopher and Professor at theUniversity of Guelph inGuelph, Ontario . He received his B.A. fromBrooklyn College before acquiring hismaster's degree fromBrown University and his Ph.D. fromYork University .He began teaching at the University of Guelph in 1971. His fields of study included
philosophy of religion , philosophy ofculture , and theethics ofmass communication . In 1995 he was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.Newman was a lifelong fan of the works of
Gilbert and Sullivan and wrote several articles about their works.
