- Legio XXII Primigenia
Legio XXII "Primigenia" (devoted to goddess "Fortuna") was a
Roman legion levied byRoman Emperor Caligula in39 , for his campaigns inGermania . There are still records of the XXII "Primigenia" inMogontiacum (modernMainz ) from the end of3rd century . The legion's symbols were aCapricorn [Legions and Veterans: Roman Army Papers 1971-2000 By L. J. F. Keppie page 128 ] and the demigodHercules .XXII "Primigenia" was first stationed in Mogontiacum in the
Roman province ofGermania Superior , guarding theRhine border as part of thelimes . Along with the rest of the Germanic army, the legion supportedVitellius in theYear of the four emperors (69 ). During theBatavian rebellion , XXII "Primigenia", commanded byGaius Dillius Vocula , was the only Germanic legion that survived attacks of the rebels and stayed in its camp, defending Moguntiacum. They remained in Moguntiacum until at least the3rd century . Later EmperorHadrian was "tribunus militum " of the XXIIth in97 -98 .The Rhine settlement was their main camp, but "
vexillationes " of the legion participated in the building of theAntonine wall in Scotland (2nd century ) and in the campaigns against theSassanid Empire (around235 ).They were still in Moguntiacum during the attack of the tribe of the
Alamanni in235 , and were responsible for the lynching of emperorAlexander Severus , when he tried to negotiate with the enemy, and the subsequent election ofMaximinus Thrax as new emperor.In
268 , "Primigenia" probably fought underGallienus at theBattle of Naissus , winning a victory over theGoths . The following year,Laelianus , the commander of the 22nd, became emperor of theGallic Empire .See also
