Veerappa Chettiar, which was situated between Murugappa Chetty Oorani and Murugappa Chetty Agraharam in the village of Puduvayal, Sakkotai Rasta, Sivagangai District. It was a very old temple with a small sanctum sanctorium and a gopuram. Poojas were performed to the ancient sacred idol of Sriman Narayana Perumal. With the high ideal of bestowing Lakshmi’s blessings on the village of Puduvayal, Sri Veerappa Chettiar decided to build a bigger temple for Sriman Narayana Sundara Raja Perumal and other Vaishnavite deities. So, in 1906, on his own land and with his own funds he started the construction of a granite stone temple to the West of the village Puduvayal.
On completion of this Perumal Temple, he brought this ancient idol of Perumal and together with the newly installed Urchavar, Sri Devi, Bhoomadevi, Sri Sundara Raja Perumal (Azhagar), Sri Soundaravalli Thayar (Lakshmi), Sri Andal, Sri Sundara Veera Hanumar, Sri Sundara Vinayagar (Thumbikai Azhwar), Sri Garudan, Sri Pathinettaam Padi Karuppar and Dwajasthambam (Kodi Maram), Sri A. S. Pl. Veerappa Chettiar performed Kumbabhishekam according to Vaiganasa Aghamam on the 20th of January, 1913.
Kumbabhishekams were subsequently performed in 1968 and 1998 also.
As this temple is situated to the West of the village of Puduvayal, this temple is popularly referred to as the “Mela Perumal Kovil”.
Poojas Performed Daily :According to Vaiganasa Aghamam, four poojas are performed daily. They are Kala Santhi (Morning Pooja), Uchchi Kalam (Midday Pooja), Sayaratchai Pooja (Evening Pooja) and Arthajamam (Night Pooja).
Special poojas to Sri Vinayagar and Sri Pathinettaam Padi Karuppar are performed during the Kala Santhi Pooja and the Arthajamam Pooja respectively.
At present, Sri A. S. Pl. Vr. R. N. Veerappa Chettiar is taking care of the temple in every respect.
The specialty of this temple :This temple is widely renowned as the giver of progeny. Sri A. S. Pl. Veerappa Chettiar and his wife Umayal Achi prayed to this Lord Perumal and were blessed with a grandson. Another Chettiar belonging to this village prayed to this deity and was blessed with children. So, he donated the idols of Sri Venugopala along with his consorts Sri Rukmini and Sri Sathyabhama. Many others have been similarly blessed.
The Unity of Saivism and Vaishnavism :The symbol of Shiva, the vilva tree, is the sacred temple tree of this Sriman Narayana Sundara Raja Perumal Temple.
Sri Pathinettaam Padi Karuppar :Similar to the Madurai Azhagar Temple, here too, whenever the presiding deity (Azhagar) has to be brought in or taken out in procession, permission is sought from Sri Pathinettaam Padi Karuppar.
Sri Krishna Sarpam :There is a Krishna Sarpam in the Azhwar Sanctorium. Devotees who pray to this Krishna Sarpam and Sri Narayana Sundara Raja Perumal are relieved of the ill effects of Raghu and Ketu.
