(1991)"What Do I Have to Do?" is a dance-pop song written by Stock, Aitken & Waterman for Minogue’s third studio album "Rhythm of Love" (1990). It was produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman and received an overall positive reception from music critics. The song was released as the third single in the beginning of
1991 (see1991 in music ), although it was unable to match the success of the album's previous singles the song was still a European chart hit, peaking in the top ten in theUnited Kingdom at #6. InAustralia the song just missed the top ten, peaking at #11.ong information
Originally planned as the follow up to "Better the Devil You Know", the track was specially remixed for single release and accompanied by, arguably, one of Kylie's most controversial, yet visually stunning, video clips to date. Directed by Dave Hogan, the video to the single continued Minogue's transition to "sex siren". The sequence had Minogue appearing in various guises and diverse locations-- a swimming pool, a fairground, doing the ironing in a French maid's costume, and dancing with a female friend in a club (played by her actress sister
Dannii Minogue who was to launch her UK music career later that year). The sexual undertones running through the video proved too much for Saturday morning TV shows which aired a censored version of the video. In relation to this video Kylie is quoted as saying "...how many Hollywood stars can you look like in 3 1/2 minutes...". Kylie loves the glam and glitter of the sirens of the Hollywood age and was nodding her head in respect to them in this video. Her love of this genre was to become apparent and done with great aplomb later in her Showgirl extravaganza. This video was her first homage to her heroines, and remains a firm fan favourite.
The 1999 biographical book "Girl Next Door" stated this track as Kylie's favourite to perform live.
