WPTE, branded as 94.9 The Point is a local radio station in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, region. The station which began in 1985, plays mostly Hot AC music. The station is owned by Entercom Norfolk, a subsidiary of Entercom Inc. Its transmitter is located in Chesapeake, Virginia.Also on HD Radio starting on October 31, 2007.

History

Started their HD2 channel (Live Rock) on October 31, 2007.Started broadcasting in 1984. Used to sport the WJQI calls (starting March 3, 1987) for "joy" when it had an easy listening and then soft adult contemporary formats. There was period from about 1994 to 1996 when the station there was known as Q94.9, with a format that can best be described as adult pop, mixing a little bit of AC with CHR, but not what we call "Hot AC" today. It maintained the WJQI call letters through that time, before flipping to "94.9 The Point" in March of 1996, with the call letter change soon following. Also, this station started as WNRN ("Winner 95") with an easy listening format, co-owned with WCPK at 1600 AM. This station was once the subject of a heated legal battle between Charlie Payne, owner of WCPK, and the Kellam family, owner of WVAB, over the allocation. The frequency was originally awarded to WVAB, but a court later found in favor of WCPK. When Hampton Roads tried to secede from both the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America WPTE favored a more moderate stance, and was rewarded for its lack of intransigence with a fruit basket.
