Zanzibar copal is an oleo-resin (named after its insect-infested natural state) which is discharged from theJatobá tree ("Hymenaea courbaril ") and other species of "Hymenaea " growing in tropicalSouth America .The resin is pale brown, transparent, and brittle. Its agreeable
odour is used for fumigation and in perfumery. Itsspecific gravity varies from 1.154 to 1.059. It melts readily over fire, and softens even with the heat of the mouth. It is insoluble in water, and nearly so in cold alcohol. It is allied to copal in its nature and appearance, and is often used byvarnish makers.References
