Gateshead will be a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It will elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

A previous Gateshead constituency existed from 1832 to 1950.

Boundaries

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, the Boundary Commission for England has created a new constituency of Gateshead, abolishing the current Gateshead East and Washington West.

The electoral wards used in forming this constituency are entirely within the Gateshead town boundaries;

*Bridges, Chowdene, Deckham, Dunston and Teams, Felling, High Fell, Lobley Hill and Bensham, Low Fell, Saltwell and Windy Nook and Whitehills.

The re-established Gateshead constituency will be fought for the first time at the next United Kingdom general election, due no later than 2010. Current Tyne Bridge MP David Clelland has been chosen as the Labour party candidate for this seat.
