- Broomhouse
Broomhouse (Lowland Scots: "Bruimhoose") is a district of
Edinburgh ,Scotland . It is mainly residential, low-rise housing. It borders on Sighthill, andSaughton /Stenhouse . TheGlasgow railway goes past here, and it is sandwiched between two arterial routes, but there is no station here. There are several schools, a community centre a Church of Scotland congregation (St David's Broomhouse) and a counselling centre here. Medical and library facilities are in nearby Sighthill andCorstorphine .Saughton House is a deceptively large Government building fronting on Broomhouse Drive and houses the Scottish Executive, Inland Revenue, DVLA and a number of other Government offices. Originally built as a hospital its distinctive spurs are now used as office accommodation.
Parallel to Broomhouse Drive is Scotland's first bus guideway opened in 2004 as a public transport initiative. The West Edinburgh Busways project, is an 8km bus corridor linking the Gyle and Edinburgh Park to the city centre and has 1.5km of two-lane dedicated guided busway, the longest section of continuous bus guideway in the UK. The guideway has been designed and constructed for future conversionto tram operation. It is also said to be similar to areas such as
Carrick Knowe , due to its enclosed area."Broomhouse" is also an area in the East End of Glasgow, adjacent to the former Glasgow Zoo.
