- Ras Muhammad National Park
Ras Mohammad ( _ar. رأس محمد) is a national park located in
Egypt at the southern extreme of theSinai Peninsula, overlooking theGulf of Suez on the west and theGulf of Aqaba to the east.History
After the
Six-Day War , in whichIsrael gained control of the Sinai Peninsula, Israel established the Ras Mohammad area as a protected area. When the Sinai Peninsula was returned to Egypt, Ras Mohammad lost protection fromfishing and other human activities. Some of the fishing methods, such as use of dynamite, also were impacting thecoral reef in addition to the fish populations. In the late 1970s, pressure mounted on Egyptian authorities to place Ras Mohammad under protection. The park was also established to protect against sprawl from
Sharm el-Sheikh and other coastal development. [cite book |author=Ibrahim, Fouad N. |title=Egypt: An Economic Geography |date=2003 |publisher=I. B. There is a saying in the area that the name arose because in side view the contour of the cliff looks like theprofile of a bearded man's face, with horizontal hard strata providing the nose amd beardedchin .Geography

hectare s of mangrove forest cover a 1.1 km shallow channel at the southernmost end of Ras Muhammad peninsula. Near the mangrove and approximately 150 m inland, there are open cracks in the land, caused by earthquakes. One of the cracks is approximately 40 m length and 0.20−1.5 m in width. Within the cracks, there are pools of water, some with a depth of over 14 m. [cite journal |title=Ecology of the Ras Muhammad Crack in Sinai |author=Por, F.D. & M.
