John Figueroa

John Figueroa

John Joseph Maria Figueroa (1920-1999) was a white Jamaican poet and educator, of Galician origin.

Figueroa taught at the School of Education of the University of the West Indies Mona campus, and at universities in Britain, Africa, and the United States. He played a significant role in the development of Anglophone Caribbean literature both as a poet and an anthologist.

He also played an important role in the development of Caribbean studies, as a founder member of the Caribbean Studies Association and the Society for Caribbean Studies.
