Technological Threat

Technological Threat

Technological Threat is a 7-minute animated film made by Brian Jennings and Bill Kroyer in 1988. It was an example of early computer animation.

The film takes place in an office where one of the dog workers passes out because of overwork. The boss replaces him with a robot that writes faster. Another worker yawns, then falls through the trapdoor under his desk, also replaced by a robot. The others get fired for sneezing, drinking water, and injury (after the sneezing worker plugs his nose up with two pencils, he sneezes them into this one's head). They are replaced by the robots. The remaining worker, surprised that his boss is replaced by a robot, takes action when he leaves, removing the robots in cartoony styles. One using a stick of dynamyte, another by making it fall through the trapdoor, yet another by hitting it with different objects, and shocks another. While the worker is chasing the last robot, they see the boss pushing the button. Quickly they slide the trapdoor onto the boss, also giving the worker the chance to push the robot off. The film ends with the worker grabbing the boss's cigar and pushing the trapdoor button on the viewer.

This was one of the segments that was featured on the DVD "Computer Animation Festival Vol. 2", renamed as "Computer Animation Experience" in 2001.

It was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 1989.

According to IMDB, it won the OIAF Award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1988 in the category "Best film under 5 minutes", but the OIAF website does not confirm this.
