(but see text)Mantellinae is a subfamily of frogs in the family Mantellidae. These frogs are native to Madagascar and Mayotte[verification needed]. These frogs are usually quite small and superficially resemble poison dart frogs of the tropical Americas. Indeed, most Mantellinae are also rather poisonous, with brilliant aposematic coloration, making them a nice example of convergent evolution. Altogether, there are nearly 100 described species in this subfamily.
Systematics
For long, 2 genera were included here:
- Mantella (16 species)
- Mantidactylus (over 80 species)
Mantidactylus includes Blommersia, Boehmantis, Gephyromantis, Guibemantis, Spinomantis and Wakea, which are often considered separate genera in recent times.
In addition, Tsingymantis is sometimes placed here but its actual position in the Mantellidae is not entirely determined to satisfaction.
