Navarun Gupta

Navarun Gupta is an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and was the subject of a documentary on South Asian gay men.

He was born in Orissa, India and spent his early childhood in Orissa and Bhopal. His family settled in Delhi, where he attended school. Gupta attained his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronic and Communication Engineering at the University of Delhi in 1988. He then enrolled at Georgia State University where he graduated with a MS in Physics in 1992. Gupta obtained an MS in Electrical Engineering at Mercer University in Atlanta in 1998, and finally a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Florida International University in 2003. His main areas of research are digital signal processing, neural networks, and related fields. In 2001, Gupta was the subject of a short documentary directed by his sister Vismita Gupta. The documentary, titled "For Straights Only", (see imdb.com entry)chronicles Gupta's struggles with his gay identity and family issues which arose when he related this news to his parents. The documentary also profiles other South Asian gay men who discuss their sexual identity and the issues which arise in South Asian families.
