"Celebrity Family Feud" was a spin-off game show created by NBC, and was hosted by television weather anchor Al Roker. The announcer was Burton Richardson. "Celebrity Family Feud" pitted two families against each other in a contest to name the most popular responses to a survey-type question posed to 100 people. This version, which was a spin-off of the original "Family Feud", featured celebrity families instead of regular families, and was a revival of the primetime "All-Star Specials" featured during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

This version also featured five-player teams composed of a celebrity captain and four friends and/or relatives, with a $50,000 charity payoff at stake. In addition, it featured a modified version of the current syndicated set, and used the classic theme music ("The Feud," as heard on the Combs version from 1988-1994) as the opening/closing theme and as faceoff/commercial cues. "Celebrity Family Feud" was taped at Sunset Bronson Studios.

Roker was chosen as the host of this version because, at the time of taping, the current syndicated daytime host of "Family Feud", John O'Hurley, was committed to a series on another network, which was the one-episode flop "Secret Talents of the Stars".

The show debuted sound effect and set changes that appeared that fall on the ensuing O'Hurley season of the syndicated "Family Feud".

Gameplay

Two family members "faced off" to see which family would gain control of that particular question. Traditionally, they greeted each other with a handshake before the question was read. Whoever guessed the more popular answer in the survey had the option to play the question or pass it to the other family. If neither player gave a valid answer, the next member of each family got a chance to answer, with control again going to the family giving the more popular answer. If both answers were worth the same amount of points, control went to the player that buzzed in first.

The family in control could keep the question in which the family attempted to give all the remaining answers on the board, or pass to the other family. Starting with the next family member in line, each got a chance to give one answer. The family got a "strike" if a player gave an answer that was not on the board or failed to respond. There was no firm time limit, but the host had the discretion to impose a three second count if time was short or the contestant appeared to be stalling. Three strikes caused the family to relinquish control of the board, giving the other family a chance to steal the points in the bank by correctly guessing one of the remaining answers. Each family member gave his or her opinion one at a time. The head of household then either selected one of those four or gave his or her own.

Each episode featured a total of three games, with the first two being elimination rounds. In the third game, the winning teams from the first two games faced off to decide who would play for the $50,000. All games followed a Single-Single-Triple point format, with 300 winning. If no team had reached or exceeded 300 after the third round, a top-answer survey Sudden Death was played. The family that identified that answer automatically won triple the value of the answer and the game.

Fast Money

The winning family went on to play Fast Money and chose two family members to play the round. This was basically the same thing as the regular version. One family member left the stage and was placed in an isolation booth, sometimes with the headset upside-down, while the other was given 20 seconds to answer five questions. If he or she could not think up an answer to a question, he or she passed. In the last episode, the explanation of the other family member was not told anymore. Except in the earliest episodes, a contestant was able to revisit a passed question at the end if time permitted. The number of people giving each answer was revealed once all five answers were given or time had expired regardless of whichever came first. The player earned one point for each person that gave the same answer; at least two people had to give that answer for it to score.

Once all the points for the first player were tallied, the second family member came back on stage and was given 25 seconds to answer the same five questions. The host asked for another response if a duplicate answer was made; the contestant knew if they've duplicated an answer by way of a short double-buzzer.

If one or both family members accumulated a total of 200 points or more, the family won $50,000 for their charity. If the family did not reach 200 points, $25,000 was still won for charity.

On the July 15, 2008 episode, Bill Engvall announced that he and Larry The Cable Guy would each give their charities $50,000 no matter who won.

Censorship

Within the first few minutes of the first episode, offensive language was censored. The question was, "Name something that is slippery and hard to hold onto," and Ice-T buzzed in and gave his answer, which was censored by way of a miniature strike being digitally placed over his mouth and the strike sound being heard. Roker, in disbelief, interpreted this as "Captain Winky," which means that, in all likelihood, the word is a derogatory slang word for the penis.
